The Race

Actors: 5
Reference: Philippians 3:13-14
Notes: If you use props, it'd be good to have four books or Bibles.
If you are performing in a small enough auditorium/church, it works well to have the "course" be the center aisle (down the middle of the audience) so that the runners have someplace convincing to run. A few lines will be spoken on this "course."

Synopsis

[View Full Script]
Three runners are gathered at the starting line of a race, warming up. The coach is giving them a pep talk. A fifth hangs back, observing. When the race starts, one runner is distracted by an interesting bug, and another runs just a few paces and then comes back, complaining that she's too old to run. The Coach counsels each and restarts the race. Each time the fifth runner applauds and cheers, but makes no move to join. When asked why, she reluctantly reveals that she did start once - years ago. She fell flat on her face and instead of helping her up the other runners just laughed or condemned her. The Coach is very sympathetic, but reiterates that there is always time to race. He points to the distracted runner who made it only a few paces down the course, and suggests the injured runner help her finish the course. The injured runner agrees, and finally starts the race again.
