Copernicus

Actors: 5-6
Reference: Truth
Notes: All characters *must* have Italian accents. They are imperative to the punch line! Lots of big, Italian gestures will help too, to make up for the lack of movement in the skit. But don’t worry if Italian isn’t your strong- suite - the worse the accent the better!

Synopsis

[View Full Script]
Copernicus, having discovered that the Earth revolves around the Sun, is determined to make his findings public despite the undoubtedly severe consequences that will accompany his "herasy." One by one his friends and family members attempt to convince him to keep the secret, but he refuses, explaining that the truth should always be spoken no matter the consequences.
To make it humorous instead of preachy, though, we added several elements. First, the horrible Itallian accents from the whole cast. Second, the melodramatic responses of each of the characters to Copernicus's "confessions." Third, ridiculous anachronisms like 3-car garages, grand pianos and Copernicus's wife, Mona Lisa who doesn't know how she'll be able to smile for her portrait. Finally, the punch line: Copernicus's third confession: he doesn't really have a bad Itallian accept. In fact, he's Polish, but his accent is more middle-American. At this admission, the tension is broken, all the other characters admit they aren't really Itallian either, and start thinking about lunch - maybe burritos, Chinese food, or Borscht.
