Second Annual Party In The Park July 28 To Offer Patrons Wide Range Of Free Activities
"Party in the Park," the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District’s second annual patron appreciation event, promises a day filled with fun, sports and music for children, families and adults. This year’s event – the biggest of the summer for THPRD – is July 28 at the Howard M. Terpenning Complex on 158th Avenue and Walker Road.

To make it even better, all the activities are free, compliments of THPRD.

The event kicks off at 9 a.m. with a Family Triathlon, new this year. It doesn’t end until 8 p.m. when the Caribbean salsa band Aguamiel wraps up a lively two-hour outdoor concert. The concert is another new addition to this year’s packed schedule.

"This event is going to be a lot of fun for everyone, and we’re excited to make it happen," said THPRD General Manager Doug Menke. "It’s our way of celebrating summer and thanking the people who have helped make THPRD what it is today: one of the nation's outstanding park and recreation districts, right here in the Beaverton area."

Other first-time events will include clinics on the increasingly popular sports of disc golf, bocce ball and cricket. Tethered hot-air balloon rides also will debut.

A highlight of the day will be the Tualatin Hills Park Foundation's "Classic at T-Hills," expanded this year to showcase vintage motorcycles as well as automobiles and trucks. Trophies will be awarded starting at 5 p.m.

The Classic will feature some of the top classic cars, muscle cars, hot rods, imports, trucks, Corvettes, Cobras and vintage motorcycles in the region. Other activities will include live music, food and beverages for purchase, raffles, and prizes. Sale proceeds will be used by the Tualatin Hills Park Foundation to help the low-income and people with disabilities, especially children, participate in park and recreation programs.

Several activities that proved popular with children in 2006 will be back: inflatable play structures, a climbing wall, face painting, and an arts and crafts corral. The "Get A Life" Marching Band will also make a return appearance. Open swim and a tennis clinic will be free to all guests, as will drop-in basketball, volleyball, badminton and pickleball.

The Family Triathlon will offer two different levels of participation. The novice level will consist of a 50-yard swim, two-mile bicycle course and half-mile run. The semi-competitive level will consist of a 100-yard swim, four-mile bike course and one-mile run. None of the races will be timed and all participants will receive a medal.

"Our first-ever Party in the Park last year drew thousands of people, and we expect thousands more this year," said Menke. "With the expanded list of activities, I think there is something for just about everyone."

Activities will be spread throughout the 90-acre Terpenning Complex, named for former THPRD General Manager Howard Terpenning. The complex includes soccer, softball and baseball fields as well as a skate park, natural area, and top-quality centers for tennis, swimming, basketball, volleyball and badminton.

Formed in 1955, THPRD is the largest special park district in Oregon, spanning 55 square miles and serving more than 200,000 residents in the greater Beaverton area. The district provides year-round recreational and educational opportunities for people of all ages. Offerings include a broad range of classes and more than 200 park sites, 35 miles of trails, eight swim centers, three recreation centers, and 1,100 acres of nature preserve.
